Mother’s Day Tea & Raffle at the Gardener’s Cottage
Sponsored by Pippins Tea Company
Sunday May 9

This is such a happy event! It was a tad cold outside for May, but no one minded. Inside the tables were set beautifully, and the tea was superb. Thank you to our sponsor Barb DeAngelis, owner of Pippins Tea Company, for bringing her knowledge of teas, her fundraising energy and her generosity to the day. Pippins handled all the Tea ticket sales, and due to last year’s success and the page 2 story in Beach Metro News, we sold out in a few days. Too bad the Cottage can’t hold more people, but then it would lose some of its charm.

A special thank you goes out to Zane Patisserie & Boulangerie, 1842 Queen St. East, for donating 120 freshly baked, melt-in-your-mouth croissants for the Tea. Rotarians made more than 300 delicious party sandwiches, and the menu included fresh strawberries, lemon squares, cookies and chocolates.

Tea ticket proceeds went to one of our major community programs, the monthly Seniors Movie at the Fox Theatre. For more on the movies, check our Home page and Upcoming Events page.

This year we took advantage of the Tea’s popularity by adding a Mother’s Day Raffle. Raffle Tickets were sold at Pippins, through some of the dedicated Providence staff, and our Club members. We were fortunate to have fabulous prizes donated by artists and businesses in the Beach community. The draw was held at the Tea, and here are the winners:

1st Prize: “The Boardwalk” limited edition signed print by Bill Taylor,
framed, donated by Mary Cserepy-Taylor on behalf of the Beach Guild of Fine Art. Value $350.
WINNER: Paula Kerr

2nd Prize: 18” Cultured Pearl necklace and matching earrings donated by
Atelier Jewellery Boutique.  1584 Queen St. East. Value $250.
WINNER: Luci Anderson

3rd Prize: Dinner for 4 at Balsam Restaurant, Queen St. East. Value $200.
WINNER: Lisa Vivian

Proceeds from the sale of the raffle tickets are being donated to Providence Health Care Adult Day Program. This most needed and successful program supports those with Alzheimers and related conditions, and their caregivers by offering a safe and caring place to meet.

Lots of fun. Lots of $$$.
We had a ball!

Our annual Bowlathon was held on Saturday, April 10 at O’Connor Bowl. We had a full house, every lane hopping with community spirit. It is wonderful to see so many familiar faces return to our annual fundraiser.

Thank you to everyone, the sponsors both long-time donors and new, the gift donors and the hundreds of folks who pledged dollars.

Your support is essential for Rotary to continue to reach out to neighbourhood and international charitable causes.

Meals for a Mine Free World
Tuesday November 10, 2009 at 6.30 PM
The Beacher Café, 2162 Queen St. East

Thanks to the fantastic crowd that attended this annual fundraiser, we had a record breaking evening. 80 most generous people gathered at the Beacher Café, where the food was spectacular, the auction over the top, and the evening’s keynote speaker was exceptional in her experience and down to earth presentation of a topic that not many of us are familiar with.

Each year, people across Canada and around the world come together to enjoy a fundraising event to help end the global landmine crisis. Meals for a Mine Free World is an opportunity for us to enjoy a meal and fellowship, and help solve the global landmine crisis. Landmines kill or mutilate 20,000 people a year; in some countries, half of the victims are children. Long after wars end, this weapon stays in the ground taking lives and limbs.

Meals Mine Free World

Rotarians Jan and Heather present our biggest cheque ever to Canadian Landmines' Treasurer and fellow Rotarian Chris Snyder.

Canada is playing a leadership role in the movement to eradicate landmines. Our keynote speaker, Paddy Torsney, was a delegate to the Ottawa Convention to Ban Landmines (1998). A warm and dynamic speaker, Paddy discussed how our dollars will save lives and give thousands of people who live in mine infested regions the chance to build a future. Paddy described the work that specially trained dogs do to safely seek out landmines and how important it is to continue with all the programs related to ridding the world of these life threatening weapons.

Thank you to the following for their most generous support.

3rd Annual Beach Jazz Tune Up Run and Walk
Sunday, July 26, 2009

This was the third annual Jazz Run that takes place during the fantastically popular Beaches International Jazz Festival. It is the official Tune Up Run for the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon, assisted by the Beaches Running Room.

First year attendance was 350, second year 500 and this year saw the 1000 mark, an amazing turnout. The runners enjoy the trail and landmarks along the way, and consider this a terrific opportunity to prepare for the September marathon. The start was at the south end of Kew Gardens and moved west along the Martin Goodman Trail (paved bicycle path). The 20K run turned at Queen’s Quay.

Rotarians served up BBQ hamburgers and hotdogs to the ravenous runners compliments of LIDO’S. Ignoring thunderstorms, an afternoon of JAZZ in the PARK concluded a very successful day on a high note.

75% of the entry fee for the Beaches Jazz Tune Up Run is donated to a great cause, The Toronto Beach Rotary Club in support of the Toronto East General Hospital Foundation.
Thank you to all the brilliant organizers and dedicated volunteers for making this a memorable day for everyone.
